Belmont Shore Residents Association

 MINUTES

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

April 10, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Mike Ruehle at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Heather Altman, Merodie Gentile, Marvin Jones, Jim Lazarus, Amber Lee, Secretary Jeff Miller, and President Mike Ruehle. Executive Board members Ron Banner, John Forstrom, Laura Spence, and Heidi Van Horn were absent. Thirty-two additional BSRA members and visitors were present.

Secretary Jeff Miller reported a total of 235 current members and a checking account balance of $2,937.42. A motion was passed unanimously to reimburse Mr. Miller $54.13 for purchase of a prepaid copy card for 1,000 copies from Mailboxes Etc.

LBPD Lieutenant Ken Rosenthal reported a quiet month with little crime activity. An audience member reported a recent burglary of construction equipment. He noted that last month's fight on Second Street did not result in any arrests, and added, "Some people shouldn't drink". Rosenthal had no additional information when questioned about another recent fight with a knife injury. There were several additional questions from the audience about noise disturbances and drunken bar patrons.

Mark Hungerford, Long Beach Community Planner, announced the recent reorganization of the department, which is now Long Beach Development Services. The Community Planning Bulletins have been discontinued; instead there will be a monthly city-wide report. He announced a community meeting on Belmont Shore zoning issues to be held on April 21 at 6 pm at Lowell School.

Jeanette Gavin, the BSRA representative on the Parking Commission, reported last month's meeting of the commission: The Community Facilities District Reformation Ballot and assessment to help finance parking lot purchase and alley reconstruction was apparently turned down in the recent vote of property owners, an analysis and recount has been requested. A proposal was discussed to create motorcycle parking spaces.

Julie Maleki from Councilman DeLong's office announced the next joint council meeting at the yacht club. She was asked if the councilman would hold community meetings at other times and locations, to reach out to constituents. Questioned about the results of the beach development survey, Maleki replied that plans are on hold due to funding concerns.

Gordana Kajer from Surfrider Foundation screened a video presentation of the history of the Long Beach shoreline, followed by an explanation of the organization's support for a study of the southern segment of the breakwater, with the goal of increasing water circulation in the bay to improve water quality. She answered questions from the audience and urged support for the study.

Laurie Semon from Olives Gourmet Deli presented the plans for their store which will be opening soon on Second Street (where Papa Jon’s/Belmont Heritage used to be). The store will be similar to their business on Broadway, focusing on freshly prepared foods.

Jeff Miller reported the status of construction at Cabo Cantina: visible work has been done inside and the chain link enclosure on the rear of the building has been removed.

Max Laubscher complained about lack of cooperation between the BSRA and the BSBA.

Melinda Cotton spoke about the presentation earlier today at the Marine Advisory Commission of plans to place “Green Bin” trash/recycling receptacles with advertising along the beach from downtown to Bayshore Ave. (The Peninsula asked to be excluded, and that request has been granted.)  The containers are large rectangular enclosures with separate receptacles for ordinary trash and recyclables. The proposal will be coming up on the city council agenda. Bill Lorbeer noted similar plans being discussed for Second Street.

Jeff Miller described the recent pancake breakfast sponsored by the neighborhood group "We Love Long Beach" and announced their next events: another breakfast on April 26 and a neighborhood barbecue on May 17.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 pm.
